Abstract

293,721. Berkel, C. F. M. van, and Maatschappij tot Vervaardiging van Snijmachines Volgens van Berkel's Patent en van Andere Werktuigen. March 11, 1927. Cutting slices in succession. - A slicing-machine comprises a manuallymovable substance-supporting carriage mounted on a stationary base 1, a rotatable knife 2, an electric or other motor adapted to rotate the knife but not to operate the carriage, and means serving to constrain the carriage so that the substance receives a movement of determinate magnitude relatively to the knife. In the machine shown in Fig. 1, comprising a reciprocating carriage 8, a shaft 10 journaled in the base 1 carries a hand-operated flywheel 11 and is connected through bevel gearing 12, 13 to a vertical shaft 14 carrying a crank 15 which is connected by a rod 16 to the carriage 8, whereby the stroke of the carriage is determined. Alternatively, a handle for pushing and pulling the carriage may be provided on the latter, the shaft 10 being dispensed with and a flywheel being fitted on the shaft 14. As shown in Fig. 3, the carriage 30 is adapted to be oscillated about a pivot 32 by means of a manually-operated flywheel 34 carried on a shaft 33, the latter being connected through bevel gearing 35, 36 to a vertical shaft 37 carrying a crank pin 39 which is connected by a rod 40 to a pin 41 on the carriage. A table 42, is provided with four substance-gripping devices 46, is pivoted centrally on the carriage 30 and can be adjusted so that any one of the devices is brought into operative relationship with the knife, the table being locked to the carriage in the adjusted position by a latch 44 engageable with notches 45 in the table. The hand-driven fly-wheel may be replaced by a hand member on the carriage. Means may be provided for adjusting the throw of the crank. As shown in Fig. 4, a circular carriage 50 having four substance-gripping devices 51 is mounted on a central post 52 and is rotated by a handle 60 on a shaft 59 which is connected through gearing 57, 58 to a shaft 56 carrying a gear wheel 55 meshing with an internally-toothed wheel 54 secured coaxially to the carriage. Feed mechanisms are provided for moving the devices 51 selectively towards the knife.
