` attain SOLOMON iivILE, ornocnnsfrnn' New 'sLIOING MACHINE.
Application led J une v24,
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, SOLOMON ViLina citizen of the United States, and resident of Rochester, in the county ofl Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slicing Machines, of which the following'is specification.
' The present invention relates toV slicing.y
machines, and an object thereof -is to provide a slicing machine, which will hev du-V rable in construction', simple'in operation and inexpensive to jinanufacture. Another object of the invention is to provide anim# provedmechanism for operating thelongitudinally movable carriage, so that a maximum movement of said carriage may be obtained. Still another object of the invention is to provide anv improved operatingv mechanism for the rotary cutter or knife. A further object of the invention is to improve the feeding mechanism for the transversely movable carriage. ther object Vof the invention is to provide-a feeding mechanism for a transverselyniov-f able carriage, having provision whereby the carriage may be accurately fed, step by step,
any desired amount, evento a very small.
fractionvof an inch.v A still further object of the invention is to provide a construction in whichthe transversely movable' carriage is held against feeding toward'the Vknife under the action'of the knife during the cutting ofthe material on the cariage. An-
other and still further object of the invention is to provide a feeding mechanism for he transversely movable carriage, embodying a Vratchet wheel and pawlwitli means for controlling the pawl, so as to varythe engagement between the pawl and the ratchet wheel, to change the amount of feedingof the feeding' mechanism. Another and'stillV further object of the invention .is to provide-a feeding mechanism vfor a longitudinally andv transversely movable' carriage,
embodying a ratchet wheel and-.pawl with a detent operated upon the .longitudinal movement of the' carriage and adapted to hold the ratchet against. turning` under the i action of the cutting blade. Y
To Nthese and other ends, the invention consists of certain parts and combinations oflparts, allof which will be hereinafter described :l ythe novel features being' pointed out in the appended claims.

In the illustratedembodiment. of the Viiivention, there isprovided a main frame having abas'e portion l- Vfrom which rises Va hollow standard 2suppor'ting a topportionA 3, which closes the upper endgof the standard, the-lower end of the? standard opening through'th'e base portionl, so that theinterior ofthe vstandard may "l be reached through the bottom of the mainframe. kThe.
top vportion extends from oppositesides Vof the hollow standard 2 and is provided with parallel guides 4. projecting'fromY opposite). sidesl .thereof and having guideygrooves 5 providedpon these inner sides. YOn the guides 4, a'longitudinally movablecarriage 6 1s mounted to slide, said carriage .having dependingFV and outwardly ex'tendingguides 7 operatingin the grooves-5 of theV guides 4.
Vithinl vthe hollow/standard 21a cross piece' 9 is arrangedxonwhich ashaft k10 is secured,l there being arranged 'above said v cross piece 9v to turn onfsaid shaft', a Vgear memher'llprovided on the-under sidevvith 110 a bevelled gear surface 12. VVih this bevelled gear surface a bevelled pinion 13 meshes, said pinion being secured to a shaft 14 which is journalled in a bearing 15 in the side of lthe standard 2. A fly wheel y16 is secured to this shaft 14 and has a Vcrank handle 17 thereon through which the shaft I j l adaptedrto enter into a notch 41 inthe opi ,pOSiteiend-ofthe. segmental guard 36. This 14 may be turned to turn the gear 11.
The gear 11 carries on its upper surface, a. projection 18 to which a pitman 19 is` pivotally connected at 20, this pitman 19 preferably having a connection with the carriage 6 which will move the carriage on the main frame a greater amount than the throw of the pitman. rlhis result is secured,l
, 22 secured to the main frame. The pitman plates.
19 has a gear 23 journalled on the outer end thereof at 24 and meshing with both of the racks 21 and 22. In order to maintain this intermeshing relation, two plates 25 are secured'on opposite sides of the gear 23 and lie above and below the racks 21 and 22, these plates projecting beyond the perimeter of the gear 23, so that the racks 21 and 22 operate between 'the plates in a groove or way provided by the outer portions of said As the rack 22 is stationary, it is apparent that when the pitman 19 is moved, the gear 23 meshing with said raclr 22 will produce an increased movement in 'the rack 21, thus giving to the carriage 6 a greater movement than the throw of the pitman.
Arranged to operate in a plane'at a slight angle tothe line kof Inovementof Vthe carriage 6 is a cutter 26 in the form of a circular bevelled disk which is secured to a shaft 27 journalled in a bearing 28 in the main frame and extending through the main frame intol the hollow standard. A nut 29 secures this blade to 'the shaft against the collar 30 on the rear face of the blade, a groove collar 31 being interposed between the nut Y and the blade having a purpose which will be hereinafter set forth. On the inner end of the shaft 27 a pinion 32 is arranged, which meshes with a gear 33 ona counter shaft 34, said counter sha-ft being journalled in the main frame and hav ing a bevelled pinion 35 thereon which Vmeshes with the teeth 12 of the bevelled gear 11, thus providing a. speed increasing means between the bevelled gear and the cutter.
In order to provide'for guarding the edge of the cutter, a segmental guard 36 is pro` l ter. l'This segmental guard covers all of the `Abe sliced.
which is pivoted at 39to one end of the segmental `guard 36 and has a free end 40 movable guard 3S may also act as a stripper and to this enduit ismovable to the'position shown inV fulllines in'liig.;v 11 so-th-at 'a prtion thereof may .enter'thefgrooved' washerl 31, so as to support the Ygua-rd and-stripper? in the position` sho-wn in Fig. 11. lnorder` that the guard 36 may Vbeheld in guarding; position, a detent 42 is provided which .-'i's pivoted at 43 to the top 3 of the lframe and .has one arm provided with Y af laterally extending portion 44 for cooperating.-with.Y
the underside of the vtop-3 and the otherarm adapted Yto cooperate withxtheguard.l 36 adjacent the pivot39.' The movementV of the end 44. downwardly shifts'the oppo'-` site end of thisdetent or latch 42 upwardly,
-so that the guard 36 `withfthe. combined;
guard and stripper 38 rmay bel-swung away lfrom the blade to permit the cleaning of the atter. Y Y
There may be also provided a receptacle ao: Y

this pawl being` pivotedlat 'on a swinging arm 6l andbeingheld towardthev ratchet wheel'by a-'spiing 62. rhe swinginginember 6l is journal'led on the shaft of the pinion l 54 to turn about an axis common to the axis. of turning of the pinion of the ratchet wheel 58, this swingingmovemcnt ofl themember 6l being communicated to the pawl 59, and,
when said pawl engages the ratchet wheel, effects the movement of the ratchet wheel. and consequently the movement of the pinion 54. ormally this swinging member .is Aheld in one position by a helical spring 63, which is secured at one end to the swingingmem-,- bei` 6l Vand at the other end to the carriage 6 at 64. Movementof the swinging member 6l in the opposite direction is effected by a stop or abutment 65, secured to the top por.-
tion 3 of the main frainein such aposition f that themember 61 is swuno to advance the:
carriage 49 toward the knife blade, astlie carriage Greaches that ond of its movement and immediately prior to the advanceof theY carriage 6 toward the knife on the new cut! l tingr action, so -that the material on the carriage 49 will be advanced for the newY cutting action. lilith the end in viewV of preventing' the retrograde movement ofthe ratchet wheel 58, theremay be provided a detent or pawl 66 pivoted at 67 to tlielbracket to the under Side of the carriage 6 and hav-v ing' a nose 7l, so disposed that it will engage the inclined faces of the ratchet wheel teeth to prevent the` advance of the ratchet wheel. Of course, this detent 69 should not engage the/ratchet wheel 58 during; thev feeding or advancing` movement of the ratchet wheel, and in order to throw the detent 69 out of engagement with the ratchet `wheel, during the feeding movement, the detent may have a depending projection@ which is adapted to cooperate with an abutment 73, pivoted at 74, to a block 7 5 which is secured to the top portion 3 of the main frame, a spring 73a normally holding. said Vabutment inl operative position and permitting the yieldingof such abutment on'tli'e return of thepdetent. Just prior to the engagement of the swinging frame 61 with the Aabutmentv65, the detent 69 through its projection 7 2 cooperates with the movable abutment 7 3 and is shifted away from detaining position. A spring 76anchored at `77 to the carriage 6 and atl72 tothe detent holds the 'detentin two, positions, this being Ydue to the mounting, of this spring which swings, so/that-its axis', in onerposi- Vtion,.lies'on,one side of the axis of*Y turning 7 O on the detent 69V and, iii the other position; lies on the opposite sidejof the axis of'turning of said detent-'69. the detent G9, to detaining position is effected on themovement of the carriageV 6 towards the knifel onithe cut-ting action. rlhis result is secured, in this insta-nce, by an abutment-v 7 8, pivotedat 79,--to the block 7 5 and adaptedY A to engage thev depending -projection72 on The A movement of the detentf) on the movement of the detent Y with the carriage 6 toward theknife blade y on the cuttingaction, the springi 76, before mentioned, holding the `detentrin detain'ing position.VV 'A spring 7 8a vcooperates with the abutment .7 8 to permit the lat-terto yield' on the movement Aof the detent direction over said. a butment,
r"here may be provided means. for varying the size ofthe cnt-this being effected by varying the'k amount of feed of the carriaicrc` 49 von the carriage 6. 'This result is accomplished, in this instance, byA a thumb inthe reverse wheel 8O mounted on ashaft 8l .and having'l 1 nraduationsy6:9J for cooperation with a liz/:ed
index 8.3. A springarni'SO21 with Aa-too'th 8Ob thereon cooperates with a notched portion 80C on the thumb wheel to hold tlie`latter in its adjusted'position.` yThe shaft V8lV of the thumb wlieelhas an arm 84 -extendingl Vlaterally therefrom and pivotally connected- .to alinl- 85. This' link in turn is pivotally connected at 86 to a controllinginember 8T vfor the pawl 59. The controlling member is, 'in this instance, in the `foiinof a disk Journalled on the hub of the pinion 54 and havingiits periphery formed on twocurves l88 'and 89 concentric to theaxis, of turning of the disk 87, but vhaving radii of differentl length.` p radius, isarranged to cooperatewvith the The curve 88,' with' the" longer Vpawl 5.9 and to hold tlie'latter out-of. en-Y y gagement with the ratchet wheel 58, while` the curve-89, with the shorter radius, per? mits the pawlto enter into engagement with inv member 6l isin normal position, where it is held by the spring` 63, it lies in engagement with the curved portion-.88 of the periphery of the controlling member 871 but, toward the Vend of theV movement of f the swinging member 6l under the action ofthe 11o the ratchet wheel 58." vWhile the swingy abutment 65, the pawl passes onto-the curved portion'89 of the periphery of the ,controlVA ling member 87 and shifts the ratchet wheel V58 an amount determined by the adjustment:
ofthe controlling member 87. It. is'apparf ent-that this amount maybe varied by shift'- ing the junction'point between the curved portions 88 and 89 withreference to the ratchet -w-heel vthroughthe turningl ofthe 59,66 and 69A out of cooperation with the ratchet Wheel rl"his means is, in this inv stance, in the form 'of a lever 90 pivoted at forms the basis of another. application iled` by me, vhere .vill be found afull descriptionof the operation of the parts herein shown. Generally tiis clamping means enr bodies two posts 9T` having slides 9S movable thereon and connected bj a clamping bar 99.
The operation of the invention will be understood from the foregoingdescription, but it may be summarized as follows: T he material to be sliced is held Aby the clamping means on the transversely movablefcarriage or table which is slidable on the longitudinally movable carriager G. The latter is operated back an forth past theeilecting cutting portion of the knife 2G by the turning of the crank handle 17 *which turns the gear l2, the latter being geared to the cutting knife or dislr 26 through speed increasingv means and said gear l2 also'being connected i to the carriage 6 through ay movement aincn f plifying means which produces a larger movement in the longitudinally7 movable carriage, than is possible to obtain through the throw of the pitman, Whie i is yconnected to said gear l2. TWhen the carriage 6 approaches the Yend of its movement just prior to its movement to present the material to its cutting blade, the paivl or detent 69 is shifted to free the ratchet Wheel and thereafter the pawl 59 is shifted to turn the VVratchet Wheel Yan amount determined' by the setting member 80. y This carries the carriage or table 49 toward the knife or cutting blade on the carriage 6, and, upon the move-v ment of the. carriage 6 toward the cutting blade, the detent again interloclrs with the ratchet wheel 58 andprevents the advance movement of the ratchet Wheel under the action of the lrnife in cutting` the material. j ,Y
i From the foregoing it -will be' seen that there has b en provided an improvedV slicing machine which is durable in construction and 'inexpensive to manufacture. in amplifying movement of novel construction is employed"betiveen'the driving gear and the longitudinally movable carriage.V An im proved driving means is employed between the cutting blade and the drive ror power shaft of the machine.v There has also been employed a novel means for controlling to a very line extent the amountof feeding of the transversely movabley carriage on the vbase frame, a
longitudinally movable carriage. Provision: c
has been made by .vhicli the action of the. cuttine blade on the material in cutting does not advance the transversely movable carriage on the longitudinally m vable carriage-i What l claim as my invention and desireV to secure by Letters Patent is:
