Coating bakers' goods.-In a bread slicing and buttering machine, the loaf is carried in a vertical holder which is reciprocated beneath a butter-holder 36 prior to the slicing operation. The butter-holder 36 is preferably vertical and contains a spring-pressed plunger, the pressure being controlled by a sleeve 47 which is depressed by a rack 48, wheel 49 and handwheel 51 and is held by a rack 52 and detent 53. The plunger. sleeve, and operating means may be swung clear to facilitate charging with butter. The outlet is regulated by a sliding plate 69 with a slot which is positioned below the outlet when the loaf is passing, and a wiper 84 being provided. An oscillating plate 54, operated by a gear-wheel 56, rack 57 on a lever having a roller 60, and a cam 61 on the bread-holder, forces a portion of the butter through the outlet. The plate 54 is returned by a spring 62 and an arm 58 and the roller end of the cam-lever is knuckled to allow the roller 60 to rise over the cam 61 on the return stroke. The plate 69 is operated by a cam 72, on the bread-holder, through a roller 71. and levers 70, 78, which are returned by springs 79, 80, the amount of movement being varied by a milled wheel 74 which is connected, through gearing, with an eccentric pivot 73 on which the lever 70 is mounted. The butter supply may thereby be cut off, the plate 54 then being rendered inoperative by a cut-out handle 67 which interposes a block between the knuckle-end of the cam-lever and the lever itself, thereby keeping the roller 60 clear of the cam 61. An indicator 75 is provided with graduations corresponding with the readings of a thermometer 77. The bread-holder is reciprocated across the butter-receptacle and the disc knife 17 by a crank 5 and connecting-rod 6. A conveyer 29 removes the slices to a receptacle 30.
