[Class 28 (ii)] A slicing-machine of the type wherein the knife is disposed in a horizontal or nearly horizontal plane and the substance is fed downwardly by a holder from above the slicing plane, the slice receiver, mounted for up and down movement, being disposed under the knife during the slicing operation, is characterized by the provision of means whereby the receiver is moved downwardly for each slicing operation through a distance equal to a slice thickness, and of means for moving the receiver downwardly through a distance sufficient to keep the slice-receiving surface clear of the knife above. As shown, the knife 11 is journalled in a carrier body 12 which is reciprocated along guides 13 by a crank 16 and connecting rod 17, and is rotated by the endless chain 21 engaging a free wheel 22 which is mounted on a fixed part of the machine. The material A is fed downwards, step by step, by the feed screw 25, the operating ratchet pawl 27 being actuated by contacting with an adjustably fixed abutment bar. The slice-receiver 28 is guided for vertical movement by a pin 29 working in a vertical slot in the food support 24, and by a sleeve 282 engaging an unthreaded part of the feed screw. The receiver has a depending web 281 in which is formed an inclined cam slot 30 which is entered by a pin 31 on a block 32 slidable on a guide rod 33 mounted on a frame 34 which is itself mounted on a threaded extension 38 of the feed screw 25 to which it is clutched by a nut operated by a handle 371. The block 32 is reciprocated on the guide rod 33 by a bracket 35 on the carrier body 12, the bracket having a vertical slot to receive the pin 31. With this arrangement, the support 28 moves downwards in synchronism with the material A, and, in addition is moved downwardly by the slot 32 during the slicing stroke of the knife, and again rises during the idle stroke. The machine may be so arranged that the knife is journalled in a stationary bracket, the substance holder and the receiver being reciprocable.
