525,634. Slicing-machines. BERKEL & PARNALL'S SLICING MACHINE MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd. (Maatschappij van Berkel's Patent N. V.) Feb. 24, 1939, No. 6142. [Class 28 (ii)] The substance-engaging abutment or gauge of a slicing-machine is flexible, and means are incorporated in the machine whereby the abutment is wound from non-sliding engagement with the substance during the slicing stroke and is wound back into operative position during the return stroke, thus avoiding the friction due to sliding movement or rubbing between the substance and the abutment during operation of the machine. As applied to a machine comprising a horizontal disc knife 3 journalled on a reciprocatory carriage 6, and a stationary substance carrier 10, the substance engaging abutment 4 consists of a flexible band, one end of which is anchored to a fixed part 12, and the other end of which is passed around a roller 13 and connected to one or more tension springs 14 also secured to the part 12. The roller 13 is mounted in a slide-block 15 carried by guide rods 16 and linked at 17 to' the knife carrier 6 to reciprocate therewith. The slide-block 15 is formed with a frame 18 carrying auxiliary rollers 19 which support the abutment 4 against the feed pressure of the substance A. In the slicing stroke, the roller 13 advances with the knife 3, and the abutment 4 is progressively rolled by the pull of the springs 14 away from the substance A, without. rubbing action. In the return stroke, the abutment 4 is rolled back into its operative position. To vary the slice thickness, the guide rods 16 are' adjustable vertically by pairs of parallel levers 20, 24 a rack 23, and a pinion 22 on a handle 21. In another form, the knife 3 and roller 13 are stationary, and the anchorage 12 of the flexible abutment 4 reciprocates with the substance carrier 10.
