A tensioning device for an endless band knife 3 comprises a slide 5 movable in fixed guides 7 and carrying the stub shaft 4 of the upper guide pulley 2, the slide having projecting downwardly therefrom a rod 9 surrounded by a spring 11, the tension of which is adjustable, and having projecting upwardly therefrom a rod 13 the head of which is engaged by a manually operable cam 17 or eccentric mounted to have a limited operating rotation and act against the spring loading through the slide, the tension being applied to the knife or released by simple reverse rotary movements of the cam &c.
