654,123. Microtomes. REICHERT, C., (trading as OPTISCHE WERKE C. REICHERT). June 30, 1948, No. 17645. Convention date, July 9, 1947. [Class 97 (i)] In a microtome in which the preparation carrier is moved in a circular path past the cutting edge, the carrier is given a rotation about its own axis equal and opposite to that in the path so that the orientation of the carrier as it passes the cutter is constant. Alternatively the cutting edge may be moved in this fashion past a stationary preparation carrier. As shown, the carrier 5 is mounted on a shaft rotatable on a disc 4 which may be revolved by a crank 3 to move the preparation 6 past a cutter 7. A gear 13 is fixed to the casing and a similar gear 14 is fixed to the carrier shaft, the gears being connected by a chain 12 or by a third gear. These gears cause the carrier 5 to be rotated in the opposite direction to the rotation of the disc 4 to maintain the orientation of the carrier 5. In a modification a ring is mounted eccentrically of the shaft of the disc 4 and is pivotally connected to this disc by three cranks on the shaft of one of which is the preparation carrier which is thereby maintained in a constant orientation. The carriage 8 supporting the cutter 7 is moved forward on a slide 9 during the non-cutting period by a screw 11 operated by gears 10 from the crank 3.
