Abstract

806,857. Mineral-mining machines. HOY & CO. Ltd., A., and PROCTOR, S. E. Aug. 27. 1957 [Aug. 27, 1956], No. 26184/56. Class 68(1) A mechanism in an endless chain cutter jib for automatically tensioning a cutter chain of a mineral-mining machine to compensate for the wear and stretch of the chain due to use. The mechanism is positioned within the jib 15 and between it and a supporting jib post 14. Extending from the jib 15 is a rack 28 and a stop 25. A helical spring fits about the stop 25 and a stop 24 on the piston rod 27 of an hydraulic jack 23 mounted in the jib 14. Associated with the rack 28 is a ratchet 31 on a lever 30 pivotally mounted on the jib post 14 and arranged to operate under certain conditions a pump 29 that controls the advance of the piston rod 27 of the jack. When the cutter chain is under tension the jib slides inwards on the jib post until the stop 25 engages the stop 24, the ratchet 31 sliding over the rack 28. On the tension in the chain due to cutting being relaxed the jib is moved outwards by the spring. The chain is always maintained at a constant tension when idle since on the jib moving outwards the rack is engaged by the ratchet with resultant movement of the lever 30, operation of the pump 29 and advance of the piston rod to an extent equal to that of the jib to compensate for wear of the chain during the previous usage.
