Cutting slices in succession, - In a slicing- machine, the substance is supported on a number of slides which are mounted in open-ended slideways on a base-plate and are combined with feedmechanism adapted positively to feed the slides with the substance thereon towards the open front ends of the slideways. As shown, the base 5 is extended in the form of an open frame 6 and the movable sections 9 are slidable in semicircular grooves 8 in the base, the end sections 9<a> being slidable in dovetail guides 5<a>, 6<a> in the member 5, 6. The sections 9, 9<a> are connected by a cross-member 11 which carries a nut-segment 16 which is pressed down into engagement with the feed screw 15 by a spring 26 and is released therefrom by a pivoted cam member. The meat damp-posts 12 are carried by the sections 9<a>. The sides of the sections 9, 9<a> may be sloped downwards towards the face of the base 5, or the sections may be oonvexed whilst the base 5 has concave grooves so that the combined surface is of corrugated form. As shown, the invention is applied to a machine in which a reciprocating carriage is guided on a bar 31 and is supported by a roller 32. Any form of guide for the carriage may, however, be used, and the invention is applicable to a machine having a knife movable past a fixed support for the feed and clamp member.
