BERKEL & PARNALL'S SLICING MACHINE MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd., Aden Road, Ponders End, Middlesex.-(Maatschappij van Berkel's Patent Naamlooze Vennootschap ; 33, Boezemsingel, Rotterdam, Holland) Jan. 7, 1936, No. 537. [Class 28 (ii)] In a slicing-machine having a slice-thickness determining gauge plate or fence and a ratchetoperated mechanical feed, the regulating-cam or shroud for the ratchet mechanism is operatively connected with the gauge plate so that it is adjusted with the gauge plate by the manipulation of a single controller. As shown, the feed ratchet is operated by the contact of the arm 19<2> with a fixed stop 20, and the regulating-cam is carried on a pinion meshing with a rack 23 which is normally stationary on the carriage 11 but is slidably adjustable by a depending member 25 contacting with the upright parts 26, 27 of a bar 28 which is itself slidably adjustable on the base 10. The gauge plate 15 is mounted on a rod 30 slidable in bearings in the base 10 and urged by a spring 31, which bears against the collar 32, into the maximum slice thickness position. The slice thickness controlling handle 40 moves over a scale 42 and is part of a lever 33 which is connected at its pivot to a cam 35 which actuates a bell-crank 36 to press the gauge plate 15 to the smaller slice thickness positions against the action of the spring 31. The end of the lever 33 remote from the handle 40 is forked to engage a pin 39 on the sliding bar 28 which is thus adjusted in accordance with the setting of the gauge plate and effects a corresponding adjustment of the rack 23 and regulating cam during the first reciprocation of the carriage 11. In a modification, the ratchet is operated by a roller on the connecting-rod 50 engaging and rocking a lever pivoted at one end to the base and being connected, at the other end, by a chain to a chain wheel secured to the pawlcarrying lever. The return of the chain &c. is effected by a torsion spring attached to the pawl carrier. The ratchet wheel is connected by gearing to the feed screw. The pawl is arranged, in known manner for silent operation, and the hand wheel for re-positioning the feed table is pressed inwards to be effective, this action lifting the pawl from the ratchet teeth.
