[Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XIV] A seat, table or other support is provided with means for raising and lowering it and means for adjusting it horizontally, the two means being adapted to be selectively operated by means of a single handle or common actuating part. For example, a seat is carried in a frame which is adjusted vertically on guides by means of screw-and-nut mechanism operated by a shaft 16, Fig. 5, while the seat is slidably adjusted on the frame by means of a screwed sleeve 13 and a nut. The shaft 16 and the sleeve 13 are selectively operated by means of a single handle 28, and for this purpose are provided with fixed collars 25, 24 respectively, housed within a casing 26 which carries the handle 28, and plungers 30, 31 actuated by a rocking member 32 engage in recesses in one or other of the collars 24, 25. The rocking member 32 is operated by a lever 34 which is forked to straddle the casing 26, to which it is pivoted at 35, and which engages trunnions 30a, 31a on the plungers 30, 31. The member 32 is held up against the plungers by a spring 33 within the handle, and the lever 34 is held in either of its two positions by a plunger 35 engaging depressions in the casing 26. In a modification, the shaft 16, Fig. 8, carries a toothed wheel 45 at its end, and the end of the sleeve 13 is formed with teeth 46, and the teeth on the wheel 45 or on the sleeve 13 are engaged selectively by corresponding teeth 49, 48 on a member 47 which for this purpose is moved transversely of the shaft by means of a quick thread screw 50. The member 47 is housed in a casing 26, and the screw 50 carries oppositely directed handles 52 at its ends. As one or other of the handles is turned into operative position, the member 47, and consequently the casing 26, is locked either to the sleeve 13 or to the shaft 16.
