Abstract

635,957. Seats. BUNTING, E. E., and BUNTING, J. N, Dec. 2, 1947, No. 31765. [Class 52 (ii)] In an adjustable seat of the kind in which an upper movable frame is connected to a lower stationary frame by front and rear pairs of links, the lower ends of each pair are pivoted to a transverse shaft, a rack and pinion mechanism being provided for movement of the shafts with associated locking means. As shown, a seat frame 10 is carried by a pair of links 25 at the front and by a similar pair of links 28 at the rear, the lower ends of each pair being pivotally mounted on a rotary shaft 20 or 21 the two shafts 20, 21 being guided longitudinally in slots 17 in base frame members 12 secured to, or slidable on, the vehicle floor. Each shaft is provided with means for rotating it as it is translated along the slot 17 so that the links 25 or 28 lift or lower the appropriate end of the seat. As shown, the front shaft 20 is provided at each end with pinions 22 engageable with racks 18 and the links 25 are mounted on the shaft 20 by means of a sheath 23. The shaft is rotated by means of reciprocatory movement of the handle 34 through ratchets and pawls 35 and the shaft can be locked in adjusted position by forcing discs 36, 43 having teeth 37 into engagement by means of a nut 49, the discs being normally kept out of engagement by springs 48. Springs 32, 33 are provided to assist the upward adjustment of the seat.
