798,125. Seats. MICROCELL, Ltd., and MOLINS, J. J. Aug. 21, 1956 [Aug. 23, 1955], No. 24279/55. Class 52(2) In a chair having a back 10 adjustable for inclination the back 10 is mounted on a hollow shaft 13 journalled in the hollow sides 11 of the chair and within one side 11 a radial arm 14 is fixed to the shaft and a toothed quadrant 15 is rotatably mounted on the shaft, the quadrant having a recess which normally engages an abutment piece 18 on arm 14 under the pressure of a spring 19 and the piece 18 being movable out of engagement by means of a button 20 The quadrant 15 is biased to an upright position of the back by a spring 21 and rubber cord 22 and a pawl member 24 pivoted inside the side 11 of the chair and operated by a cable 25 and lever 26 engages the teeth of the quadrant to lock the back 10 at the desired inclination. The quadrant has a lug 28 engageable with a back stop which is adjustable. Operation of button 20 frees the back from the quadrant so it can be swung into a horizontal position, suitable supports being provided. The recess 17 and abutment 18 are provided with cam surfaces so that disengagement takes place if the chair back is pushed forward, a pivoted lock 33 on the quadrant preventing disengagement except when the lock is hinged out of the way by engagement with a fixed abutment when the quadrant is brought to the upright position.
