Abstract

186,785. Bayliss, S. Aug. 25, 1921. Vices.-A quick-adjustment vice comprises a fixed jaw carried by a channelled member 2 bolted to a base-plate 3 and a movable jaw, the shank 5 of which slides within the member 2 and forms a guide for a sliding block 7 fixed to an operating-spindle 6. The block 7 carries two pawls 11 pivotally mounted in recesses 10 and passing through slots 13 in the shank 5 so as to engage teeth 15 on the inner sides of the member 2. On turning a nut 8 engaging the outer end of the spindle 6, the latter moves to the left accompanied by the block 7 and the pawls 11 are pressed into engagement with the teeth 15. Further rotation of the nut 8 provides a final grip. Reverse rotation allows a spring 9 pressing against a collar on the spindle 6 to force the latter and therefore the block 7 to the right whereby the pawls 11 engage the corners of the slots 13 and are withdrawn from the teeth 15 thus allowing quick adjustment of the movable jaw.
