Vices.-In a foot-operated vice, the sliding jaw b is provided with a rack c with which co-operates a toothed block d, which, upon the depression of a treadle p, is first moved upwardly to engage the rack and is then moved horizontally to cause the work to be gripped. The release of the work is effected by depressing a second treadle o. The treadles o, p are connected by a chain m passing round a sprocket n secured to a shaft f which has two eccentric parts which actuate respectively a bell-crank g to raise the block d, and a block e to move the block d horizontally. Springs k, l withdraw the block d from the rack when the treadle o is depressed.
