Variable -speed belt gearing. - In stepped-pulley gearing for use on lathes &c., main operating-levers 20, 21 adjustably pivoted on arms 16, 18 secured on a standard 14 are operated through a connexion 28 by a hand-lever 22 similarly mounted, the levers 29, 30, carrying the pivoted belt forks or sleeves 42, 43, being pivoted on the ends of the levers 20, 21. Levers 33, 34 carrying adjustable weights 38 are pivoted on the levers 20, 21 and have toothed ends 33', 34<1> engaging with toothed ends 30<1> on the levers 29, 30, so that the levers 29 or 30 moving the belt 7 from a large to a small step remains firmly in alinement with its operating-lever 20 or 21. the other lever 30 or 29 being swung by the resist. ance of the belt so that its weighted lever 34 or 33 moves out at right-angles to the lever 21 or 20 and rapidly shifts the belt on to the larger step as soon as resistance is removed by the belt moving to the small step on the other pulley.
