Abstract

162,335. Caton, C. H. Dec. 19, 1919. Variable-speed gearing.-Bars a, b, Figs. 1 and 6, which are moved selectively to shaft clutch and gear members are provided with oppositelydisposed, spring-actuated, pointed plungers or toggles, to complete the movement and hold the bars locked in the final positions. The bars a, b are each in two parts connected by gudgeons a<1>, b', which are forced across the space between two pointed plungers h<1>, h<2>. These plungers slide in fixed sockets and are thrust outwards by springs m. When the gudgeons have passed the points of the plungers, their movement is assisted by the return of the plungers. Instead of the plungers, a pair of toggle links p, p<1>, Fig. 4, may be used acted on by springs p<4>. Spring-actuated forks releasable by hand may lock the toggles in their extreme positions.
