Abstract

183,951. Hatcher, E. C., and Rooke, T. May 11, 1921. Variable-speed toothed gearing comprises intermediate shafts 34, 35 driven through a worm- and-wheel pair 36, 37 and driving through a like pair 41, 42 and connected by alternative trains brought into action by clutches. The driving and driven shafts are 31, 32 respectively. In a form shown in Fig. 5, the alternative trains are spur and are operated by double clutches 40 upon the shaft 35. In a form shown in Figs. 1, 2, the alternative trains 38, 39 are worm-and-wheel, and the shafts 34, 35 cross each other at right angles. Four clutches 40 on the worm-wheel shafts 35 are brought into action singly to yield three speeds and reversed driving, being operated through selector bars 43 from a lever 45 moving in a gate 46. In a form shown in Fig. 4, the worm-geared crossed intermediate shafts 34, 35 are carried in a revoluble frame 33a. Means for reversing the drive are provided independently of the four clutches 40, so that four speeds in either direction are obtainable in addition to a solid drive. The clutches 40 are operated by two grooved collars 70, and the reversing-gear by a lever 65. The terminal worm-wheel 42 is loose upon an extension 33b of the carrier 33<a>. The wheel 42 has two clutch members 55. 62 and the extension 33b one member 63. A clutch sleeve 57 has a sliding connection 64 with the driven shaft 32. As shown, the wheel 42 is locked by a sliding member 51, and the shaft 32 is driven from the carrier 33<a> in a direction which may be the same or not as that of the shaft 31. When members 51, 57 are slid to the left, the member 51 clears the wheel 42 and by dogs 52 engages dogs on the carrier. The member 57 releases the carrier and engages the wheel 42 only, yielding a reversed drive. The solid high-speed drive is effected when the members 51, 57 are moved to the extreme right, the wheel 42 and carrier being both clutched to the shaft 32. The locking member 51 may be held against rotation by springs, or by a magnetic or liquid-circulation device.
