Variable - speed toothed gearing; clutches, claw.- Variable - speed transmission mechanism for motorvehicles has the gear-wheels e, f, g, h, sliding clutch members q, t, u, cores s, &c. held in place on the transmission shaft b without the use of screws, nuts and pins, by means of the spacer keys p, p<1>, p" in the grooves k of the shaft b, the ring o, and the annular caps r. A washer v is employed at one end and the nut x is screwed on and held in place by a cotter pin y. Holes t', Fig. 2, are formed in the slidable clutch members t to afford room for the spacer keys p', and the jaws t<x> are lower than the jaws t<11> to ensure that the jaws t<11> engage with clutch jaws formed on the lateral faces of the gears f, g.
