872,277. Reverse gear. SMITH, J. April 29, 1960 [May 1, 1959], No. 14876/59. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXIX] The output shaft 12 of an hydraulic sliding- vane type torque converter, (Group XXIX), carries a freely mounted bevel gear 53 of a forward, neutral and reverse gear box meshing with idler gears 56, in turn meshing with a gear 54 freely mounted on a final output shaft 55. Clutch members 62, 63 are keyed or splined to the shafts and are axially movable from.a neutral position towards each other to engage dogs 66, 67 formed thereon so that the shaft 55 rotates in the same direction as the shaft 12, or are axially movable away from each other to engage dogs 64, 65 on their outer faces with dogs 59, 60 on the gears 53, 54 so that the shaft 55 rotates in the opposite direction to the shaft 12; the dogs 59, 64 are arranged to engage before the dogs 60, 65. The clutch members 62, 63 are movable by the rotation of a lever 72 having notched ends engaging projections 73 on forked arms 69 which engage grooves 68 in the members and are secured to axially slidable rods 72. The rods are provided with notches which are engage - able by spring-urged plungers to determine the positions of the members for forward, neutral and reverse drive.
