Variable-speed belt gearing.-In stepped-pulley gearing of the kind in which one pulley 3 is provided with steps connected by conical surfaces 4 and the other pulley 6 is cylindrical, a tensionpulley 7 controlled by a weighted bell-crank lever 11 is employed and the belt is shifted by rack and pinion means. The belt shifter 16 is secured to a head 15 sliding on a rod 14 and carrying a rackbar 12 sliding in a guide 13. The pinion 18 engaging the rack turns with a weighted crankhandle 20, the pinion being of such dimensions that one rotation of the crank 20 shifts the belt one step and the weighted arm keeping the belt in proper position.
