Vices.-The body 12 of a foot-operated vice is mounted to turn horizontally in a plate 11 carried by the bench and supporting post 10, and is secured in its adjusted position by a screwoperated friction block 41, Fig. 8. The gripping movement of the sliding jaw 14 is effected by a pawl 1H adapted to engage a rack 17 on the shank 15 of the jaw, and pivoted on a pin 19 slidable in slots 20 in the body, the pin 19 forming one end of a pair of toggle levers 21, 22 the middle pivot of which is connected to a rod 23 having a ball and' socket connection 24 with the short arm 25 of a bell crank lever 26 formed with a foot piece 30, Fig. 2. A spring 37 connecting the lever 26 and post 10 tends to raise the foot piece 30 and in this position of the parts the pawl 18 is disengaged from the rack 17 by the engagement of its tail part with a cam 38 on the body 12. The foot piece 30 is held in its depressed position by a rack 31 upon it and a pinion 32 mounted on an arm 33 and prevented from turning in one direction by pawls 35. Release of the foot piece is effected by depressing the arm 33 against the action of a spring 34.
