Abstract

Pliers and pincers.- In pliers or like gripping-tools of the kind described in Specification 11352/13, in which the foot b of an L- shaped jaw such as a, Fig. 1, is formed as a rack engaging a pin p in an extension c of a jaw d to which is pivoted at g a lever f pivotally connected to a link j formed with a rack engaging a pin fixed to the jaw a, a spring u retaining the racks in engagement with the pins, the rack foot b operates on one side only of the extension c and is either formed as one piece or is slotted and has a separate rack part secured to it, the pin p is adapted to clamp the parts in an adjusted position, and the lever f is of U-section embracing a lug e. The rack n, Fig. 1, is riveted to one end of the foot b and has a tongue n<1> fitting a recess in the end of the slot o, a turned over projecting part of the tongue securing the rack to the foot b. The rack n may also be formed as a plate riveted to the ends of the foot b or as a flanged plate, part of the flange fitting in the slot o. The pin p has a semicircular head and at its other end is either riveted to the extension c or is threaded and passed through a slotted link pivoted to the lever f, a thumb-nut securing the parts in an adjusted position. With this arrangement, the tool may be used as callipers. One end of the spring u is hooked to a groove in a distance piece between the ends of the link j, and the other is attached to a lug on the extension c or to an eye formed on one end of a hole in the extension c. A strap may be secured to the end of the link j by the screw h<1> so that the tool may be used as a hammer.
