Description

C. E. NEBEL.
WRENCH.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 14, x920.

I 37513 I WW %Z attain; g
A UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC.
CHARLES E. NEBEL, 0F GLADSTONE, MICHIGAN.
WRENCH.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHAnLns E. NEBEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gladstone, in the county of Delta and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in renches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to theaccompanying drawin s. i
lhis invention relates to wrenches and has for its object the production of a simple and efficient pipe wrench which may be con veniently adjusted to different size pipes, for threading one pipe into another pipe or into a threaded joint adapted to receive the same.
Another object of thisinvention is the production of a simple and efiicient means for gripping the chain and holding the same ti "htly around a pipe.
Vith these and other objects in view this invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a View in side elevation of a portion of the wrench showing the same as it appears in operation.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the wrench.
Fig. 3 is a view in end elevation of the wrench showing the gripping chain in section.
Fig. 1 is a bottom plan view of the.
wrench.
Fig. 5 is a front view, in elevation, of the chain gripping link.
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that 1 designates the handle of the wrench which may be made of any material desired such as wood and the like and this handle 1 is provided with a reduced shank 2 over which reduced shank 2 fits a metallic casing 3. Thethandle 1 is provided with an abutment shoulder 4 against which fits the casing 3. This casing is firmly held upon the shank portion 2 by means of a securing bolt 5 as shown clearly in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
The casing 3 is provided with a thickened upper face 6 having a plurality of trans versely extending notches? formed therein.
(A chain gripping link 8 is adapted to fit within one of these notches 7 and this chain engaging link 8 is provided. with a chain Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 14, 1920. Serial No. 358,597.
gripping socket 9 formed therein for receiving the end link 10 of the chain 11. The link 8 is adapted to fit over the casing 3 as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings and the shoulder portions 8 bears against the bottom of the casing 3 for preventing the link 8 from moving toward the inner end of the handle 1, when the handle 1 raised, but will press upon the handle 1. The chain 11 is adapted to pass around the pipe 12 and the free end of this chain 11 adapted to fit within the chain gripping SOLlIQt 13 formed in the chain gripping or grab link 14. Any one of the vertically extending links 15 of the chain 11 is adapted to fit in this socket 13 and the transversely extending links 15 of the chain will firmly hold the chain against longitudinal movement through the link 1 1-. The vertically extending links 15 of the chain will firmly be held within the notch 13 by some of said links 15 resting upon the corner 1'? of the casin 6 thereby preventing the chain from accidentally falling out of the 110th or socket 13. The casing 3 is provided with an aperture 18 formed therein which registers with a socket 19 formed in the shank 2 for receiving the transversely extending portion 20 of the link 14 thereby pivotally connecting this link 1 1 with the shank 2 of the handle 1. The transversely extending portion 20 of the link 14: is firmly held within the socket 19 by means of an adjustable plate 21 which overhangs the socket 19 and this plate 21 is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 22 through which slot pass the bolts 23 for holding the plate 21 in a set position and against sliding movement upon the casing 3. j
The end of the handle 1 is adapted to set squarely against the pipe 12 and the chain 11 passes around the pipe 12 in a taut condition, one end being secured to the link 8 and the other end being adjustably secured under the grab link 14. WVhen the operator raises the handle 1, the upper end of the chain 11 will be drawn downwardly by means of the grab link 14:, which is secured to the bottom face of the casing 3, and thus a leverage is thereby obtained.
Owing to the length of the handle an enormous leverage can thus be exerted so as to firmly hold the pipe, and after the grip is obtained to turn the pipe. It is to be borne in mind that the lever can be set at any angle or turned in the reverse direction so long as the handle is moved in such a way as to .draw together any such articles where a tightening force is needed, like the putting on of hoops on barrels or to obtain a purchase and hold securely any article of large size and not too smooth a surface. It should also be borne in mind that the device may be disengaged quickly by releasing the leverage and reset either upon the same pipe or upon a larger or smaller pipe by adjusting the chain 11 so as to fit snugly around the article upon which a firm grip is desired.
What is claimed is 1. A wrench of the class described comprising a handle, said handle provided with a reduced shank, a casing mounted upon said shank, said casing provided with a plurality of sockets formed in the upper face thereof, a chain securing link adjustably mounted within one of said sockets, a chain secured to said chain securing link, said casing provlded with an aperture formed upon the lower face thereof, a chain gripping link fitting in said aperture, means for retaining said gripping link within said aperture, and said chain gripping link provided with a chain gripping socket formed in the upper end thereof adapted to receive a link of said chain.
2. A wrench of the class described comprising a handle, a casing secured to said handle, a chain securing link adjustably secured to said casing, said casing provided with an aperture formed therein near one end, said handle provided with a socket registering with said aperture, a chain gripping link mounted within said socket, an adjustable plate mounted upon said casing and provided with a longitudinally extending aperture formed therein for permitting said plate to be moved over said aperture formed in said case, and said chain gripping link provided with means for engaging a chain and holding the same against longitudinal movement therethrongh.
In testimony whereof I hereunto allix my signature.
