Abstract

573,161. Rope grips. MENGEL, C. F. Aug. 6, 1943, No. 12738. [Class 78 (ii)] A rope jockey comprises rope clamping jaws 2, 4 connected by a tension member 5 which passes through one jaw and provides a fulcrum on which the other jaw 4 is tiltable, a knock-off lever 10 pivoted on the tension member, and a rotatable screw member 17 exposed for manual actuation and independent of the tension member for forcing the tiltable jaw 4 towards the other jaw. The jaws are held together by a T-headed bolt 5 on which pivots the knock-off lever 10 which has face cams 13 co-operating with cams 14 on the back of the jaw so that when the lever is turned from the vertical position shown to the horizontal position the jaws are forced together. The hole in the movable jaw 4 through which the bolt 5 passes is flared inwardly at 26 to allow pivoting movement and the screw 17 threaded in the lower end of the jaw 4 bears against the stem 3 of the fixed jaw 2, the leverage being'such that the rope 16 can be firmly gripped by rotation of the screw 17 without undue exertion. Lugs 20 on the jaws taking into recesses in the opposite jaw support the rope when the grip is disengaged. Fig. 4 shows the device modified to enable the knock-off lever 10 to operate in a horizontal plane, the bolt 5 being replaced by a member 27 with a vertical hole 28 for a pivot pin 29 forming the pivot of the lever. An edge cam 30 on the lever operates against the plane surface 31 of the back of the jaw 2 to close the jaws.
