Abstract
145,004. Litchfield, I. W. June 17, 1919, [Convention date]. Pliers.-A wrench, which can be converted into pliers, is constructed with relatively movable jaws 4, 7, operated by pivoted handles 21, 2 to grip the work, and fitted with a wedge 12 which can slide on a guide attached to the jaw 4 and is operated by a lower pivoted part 16 of the handle 21, and adapted to operate the wedge so as securely to hold the jaw 7 in gripping position. The jaw 7 moves on a guide 5 on the jaw 4, this guide being formed with a. notch 8 engaged by a flange 9, and the jaw 7 and wedge 12 are normally caused to move together by a connecting- spring 13, but after the jaws grip the work the wedge 12 is raised by the lever 16, the pivot 17 of which engages an elongated slot 19 in the lever. A spring 20 opens the parts when the grip is released, and a pin 15 causes the wedge 12 and the jaw to return together. When used as pliers, the jaw 7 is locked to the wedge by means of a sliding bolt 23, Fig. 4, which may be fitted with the spring 13 which normally causes the jaw and wedge to move together.
