Abstract

140,754. Bryant, W. A. March 21, 1919, [Convention date]. Sliding-jaw wrenches.- In self-adjusting wrenches of the kind comprising a handle provided with a fixed jaw, a guide for the serrated shank of the movable jaw, and a guide for a locking bolt engaging the serrations, and in which the jaws are closed by spring action, the locking bolt is released and the jaws are opened by a single stroke of an operating lever. The fixed jaw 14 is integral with a handle 13, formed with a recess 18, in which is pivoted at 26 an operating lever 8, connected by a link 10, to a toothed locking-bolt 9, sliding in a guide 17, and engaging teeth 23 on the underside of the shank of the movable jaw 19, which slides in a guide 15, 16. In the movable jaw 19 is an opening 22, for the end of a lever 7, pivoted at 28 within the recess 18, a spring 12 normally tending to close the jaw 19 towards the fixed jaw 14. A spring 11 normally presses the lever 8 so as to hold the bolt 9 in locking engagement. On pressing upwards the end 27 of the actuating lever 8, the locking bolt 9 is first disengaged, and then the projection 29, on the lever 8, engages the lever 7, moving it to the left and opening the jaws. A cover-plate may be fixed to the handle extending over the recess 18 and enclosing the working parts.
