Pivoted and sliding jaw wrenches. -Relates to wrenches of the kind in which a shank carrying one jaw is provided with a rack the teeth of which slope transversely from ona face of the shank to the other, and a toothed locking block for engaging the rack is carried by the other jaw-carrying member and is pivoted upon an arm parallel to the shank, and consists in an improved construction and arrangement of the locking block. In one form, Figs. 1 and 4, the shank 1 carrying the fixed jaw 3 has rack teeth 8 sloping from one face of the shank to the other, and a toothed block 12 for engaging the teeth 8 is pivoted by integral pins 13 in a casing 6 which slidably embraces the shank 1. The pins 13 are mounted respectively in a hole 14 in a wall 27 fixed to the casing, and in a slot 15 in the rear end 28 of the casing, a rod 16, extending across the casing, being provided to retain the pin in the slot. A thumbpiece 17, fixed to the rear pin 13, is provided with a spring pin 18 to engage a pair of notches 21 in the casing to hold the block in the locking and released positions. The outer jaw 4 is carried by a shank 5 pivoted to the casing 6 and guided by a yoke 7 fixed to the shank 1, a flat spring 34 fixed to the yoke and bearing against the shank 5 preferably being provided. The locking block 12 may be applied to the form of wrench in which the inner jaw is fixed to a casing slidable on the shank of the fixed outer jaw, and also to the form of wrench in which a head on one end of the handle is formed with a fixed jaw and carries the sliding jaw, the locking block in the latter case being mounted' in an opening in the head and engaging teeth on the shank of the movable jaw. The spring pin 18 may be mounted in the casing instead of on the thumb-piece 17.
