Abstract

Sliding-jaw wrenches; hand grip wrenches; jaw faces and attachments.-A hand grip sliding-jaw tool which may be used as a wrench comprises a sliding jaw 8 formed with a rack 14 and operated bv a pawl 12 connected to a hand lever 5 on the side of the lever pivot 6 remote from the hand grip portion. In one form Fig. 1, the pawl 12 is directly pivoted to the hand lever 5 and is disengaged from the rack 14, when the handles 4, 5 are opened, by the engagement of a projection 16 on the pawl with a tongue 15<a>. The jaw 8 is guided by grooves engaging ribs 9 on the side plates 1 of the tool and uncontrolled movement of this jaw is prevented by a flat spring 10, or by a spring pressed ball mounted in a hole in the jaw and bearing against one of the plates 1. A removable pin 18 is provided to prevent the jaw from falling out. The handles 4, 5 may be retained closed by turning a hook 19 into engagement with a notch 20. In a second form, Fig. 2, the pawl 12 is connected to the handle 5 by a link 28 and is moved parallel to itself by the engagement of inclined faces 21, 24 on the pawl with fixed inclined surfaces 24, 25. The handles are retained closed by a pin 29 which is slidden over the spring 17 to hold it inoperative. In both forms the fixed jaw is detachable and consists of aT-member 7, Fig. 2, the stem of which is secured between integral plate parts 7b, Fig. 1, of the tool body by bolts 7<a>.
