Description
April 24, 1945. 1 PW. DAVIS v 2,374,423
' PIPE WRENCH Filed Dec. 50, 1942 Patented Apr. 24, 1945 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PIPE WRENCH Frederick W. Davis, East Hartford, Conn. Application December, 30, 1942, Serial No. 470,573
1 Claim. (Cl. Est-1103) My invention relates to the class of devices above named, and an object of my invention, among others, is the provision in a wrench of means for effectually taking up lost motion between the fixed and movable jaws and to minimize the. number of parts employed in mechanism for effecting this purpose. I
One form of a, wrench embodying'my invention and in the construction and use of which the objects herein set out, as well as others, may be attained is illustrated in the accompanying drawnoted by the dotted line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
In the accompanying drawing the numeral 5 denotes the body or stock of my improved wrench, this comprising a bottom fi andsides I preferably integrally formed together with a coverplate 8 removably attached to the body as by means of screws, as shown in Fig. 3. A pawl support 9 in the form of a dividing piece extends lengthwise within the body, about centrally thereof. This support also acts as a support for the cover 8 which isattached thereto as by means or screws. It forms recesses Ill-II for jaws I2-I3, thejaw I2 being substantially stationary and formed at the end of a handle I4 while the jaw I3 is movable and comprises a shank I5.
In the operation of the device it willnow be seen that the pawl I9 having been operated to permit the jaw I2 to loosely engage a piece of pipe 29, a lateral movement of the handle to turn the piece of pipe will bring the jaws I2 and I3 into tight engagement with the piece of pipe,
the pawl I9 supportin the jaw I3 and the cam slot 21 acting on the camming pin 28 forcing the pressure occasioned by force appliedto the han- These jaws are provided with gripping teeth ,I6Il and the shank I5 is provided with ratchet teeth I8 on one edgewhich teeth are engaged by a pawl I9 pivotally mounted in a recess 20 in the upper edge of the pawl support, as shown in Fig. ,3. This pawl has a pivot pin 2I which is mounted at one end in a hole in the support 9 and its opposite end serves as a pivot in the hole 22 in the cover plate 8. A finger piece 23 extends through an arcuate slot 24 in the cover plate as a means for operating the pawl to engage it with or disengage it from the ratchet teeth I8.
A guide pin 25 projects from the handle I4 in proximity to thejaw I2 thereon and a camming pin 26 extends from the handle I4 into a cam slot 21 in the cover plate 8, asshown in Fig, 3
of the drawing, the guide pin 25 extending into somewhat wider to permit this lateral movement. 1

dle takes place.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes I have described the principles of operation of my invention, together with the device which I consider to represent the best embodiment thereof; but desire to have it understood that the device shown is only illustrative and that the invention may be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set A pipe wrench comprising a substantially rectangular stock having parallel channels with thin side walls forming opposite sides of the stock and extending the entire length of the stock, and a thin dividing wall having a shallow cut-away por- 1 and having ratchet teeth formed on the inner the outer side pieces of said channels and conforming to the boundaries of said stock, all of the parts consequently being confined within the width of said stock, a handle secured to the shank of said active jaw, a jaw formed on the end of the movable jaw member at right angles to the shank thereof to enact with said active jaw in grasping an article between them, a guide pin carried by the active jaw and extending through a guide slot in the cover plate, a cam pin on said activejaw extending through a cam slot in said I cover plate and a finger piece on said pawl extending through a curved slot in said cover plate.
