Abstract

149,353. Friedmann, D. March 9, 1918, [Convention date]. Vices.-The movable jaw of a vice is actuated by two hollow internally-threaded spindles engaging screws in the fixed part of the vice and leaving between them in known manner a free central space, a divided slideway on the fixed part of the vice and below the spindles forming a guide for a dovetailed slide on the base of the movable jaw. The movable jaw 4, Figs. 3, 4 is actuated by hollow spindles 12, 13 mounted in the jaw 4 and engaging screws secured to the fixed jaw, and is provided with a dovetailed base 5 engaging a divided slideway 2, 3 extending forwardly from the fixed jaw. Spur-wheels 14, 15 on the ends of the spindles 12, 13 engage a central spur-wheel 7 of twice the size secured to a handle-operated shaft 6 rotatably mounted in the part 8 of the jaw 4 and in a plate 9 secured to the jaw. For gripping pipes, a jaw face 17, Fig. 5, having a V-notch 18 and provided with projections 19 may be fitted to either jaw or two separate parts 20, 21, Figs. 7 and 8, together forming a V-notch 22 and connected by a bar 24 passing beneath the jaw, may be used. In place of the spur-wheels, V-toothed wheels may be used; or, when the drive is from the side of the movable jaw, a worm and worm-wheels may be employed.
