Vices.-A parallel vice is constructed with jaws 9 which are each carried by sliding parts 2, 3, connected by studs 5 formed with right- and-left-hand threads by means of which the parts 2, 3 are adjustable laterally on guide-bars 13 attached to the bed 1. The parts 2, 3 are operated by two right-and-left-hand screwed spindles 4 which are formed with end pinions 7 operated simultaneously by a common pinion 7<a> formed with a squared end 6 for the engagement of a key or handle. The guide-bars 13 project over the threads 4 and prevent filings from falling therein, at the same time the threads are easy of access for lubrication. The jaws 9 are formed with rear sloping faces so that the gripping-pressure of the jaws tends to force them downwards. The bed is formed with a central opening 14 to permit of the insertion of a long piece of work in a vertical position, and for gripping work of this nature, inset cheeks 10, 11, shaped as shown in Fig. 2, may be arranged between the jaws 9.
