Abstract

184,899. Brooker Manufacturing Co., Ltd., and Brooker, H. May 24, 1921. Vices.-In vices of the kind in which both jaws are slidably mounted, one jaw has means engaging a pair of racks to permit of a coarse adjustment and the other is adapted for fine adjustment by means of a screw. A central gap is provided below the jaws to allow long articles to be gripped vertically. Two jaws 4, 5 are slidably mounted on a base 1 adapted to be attached to a bench and provided with a central and preferably circular gap 15. The jaw 5 is adapted for coarse adjustment by a ratchet d'evice 6 released by a handle 9 and normally pressed into engagement with two side racks 7 on the base by a spring 8. The jaw 4 is adjustable by a screw 12 rotatably connected at 14 to the jaw and engaging a nut 13 which is fixed by screws to the base 1 and is housed within an aperture 17 in the jaw 4 when the latter is withdrawn. That part of the base 1 surrounding the gap 15 may be strengthened by a circular flange 16 or by providing a wide rectangular base.
