Vices.-Relates to vices of the kind in which stepped jaws having sloping backs are mounted upon the face of a V-shaped cavity in a baseplate and are simultaneously and equally moved up and down the same, and consists particularly in the manner of operating the jaws. The jaws c, c<1>, having faces of step-like formation slightly recessed in the middle to take a curved work piece, and particularly designed for holding the work under drilling-machines, are provided with horizontal extensions d, d<1>, each passing under the other jaw in such manner that the raising of one jaw equally raises the other. The jaws are guided along the inclined walls b, b<1> of the base-plate a, and the jaw extensions are connected by a spring l, the tendency of which to force the jaws apart is overcome by their weight and serves to cushion their downward movement. The jaw c carries a spring-pressed rocking spindle h threaded at its lower end to engage a nut g having a rack extension f adapted to engage a rack e on the extension d<1> of the jaw c', whereby rapid adjustment of the jaws to the work may be effected when the racks are disengaged and then a final tightening made by turning the spindle when the racks are in engagement. The Provisional Specification describes also the provision of a worm - wheel mounted on the spindle for the final tightening.
