Application filed January 5, 1921. Serial No. $5,227.
. have invented certain new and useful Tm- Machines and other Vises Holding or Setting Applitollowing is a specificarovements 1n and like Work ances, of which the tion.
other vises and similar work holding or setting appliances of the type in. which the jaws or jaw members are rigidly built parts having one piece gripping faces, that is to say vises wherein the faces of the jaws are not adjustable independently of the a vise comprises two rigboth of which are sometimes adjustable and at other times one only adjustable and the other fixed, and it has previously been proposed to mount one or both of these jaws so that the gripping :taces may be set at an angle to each other, and also to divide one jaw into segmental members pivotally mounted so that the faces of the members can be set at various incli nations to each other and afterward locked in such adjusted positions.
The invention provides a vise in which a rigidly built jaw or jaw member is mounted upon a stem or projecting portion of a traversing nut, carried; by the vise bed and adapted to be moved by a traversing screw, so that said jaw or jaw member may swing or pivot upon said stem or portion for adjustment of angle of jaw face. Preferably the jaw or jaw member is so mounted that it mayswing or pivot completely around upon its carrying stem or porti n In addition, said jaw or jaw memb r may be mounted in such a way that the angle of its face may be fixed upon the traversable nut and the not then be moved by the traversing screw for setting the jaw to the work.
According to the invention three jaws or jaw members are carried by a single bed, said jaw members being mounted for independent traverse and adjustment by and upon their respective nuts, which engage and slide in slots formed in the bed. Preferably, the slots are arranged substantially in the form of the letter T, two of said Usually such idly built jaws,
The invention relates to machine andslots being in a straight line, and the other slot at right-angles to these two slots, so that two jaws or jaw members working 1n the slots which are arranged in a straight line may be used as a simple vise, and these two aws or jaw members in combination with the remaining jaw members may be used as a combination grip arrangement. The construction may be such that all the aws, or aw members, can swing or pivot completely around upon the carrying stems or portions of the traversable nuts so as to be adaptable for internal grip of an article. A desirable embodiment of the invention is represented by the accompanying drawings wherein Figure l a plan of a vise embodying the invention.
2 a longitudinal section, and
lihg 3 a transverse section. 15 or the sake of clearness some of the jaws in Figs. 2 and.
3 are changed as to position.
The bed'a of the vise is rigidly built and has an elevated surface a along which the three jaws c, d and e slide. Slots a a and 62*", arranged in the form of the letter T are formed in the bed, the slots a and a being in substantially a straight line and the slot at at right-angles to these two slots.
The jaw 0 is mounted upon a stem or projecting portion i of a traversable nut f so that said jaw may swing or pivot for adjustment of angle of the jaw face 0 said jaw being free to swing clear around on said stem or portion. The nut 7 is traversed by the screw 9 which is mounted in the bed' immediately below the slot a said nut being guided and supported at f within the slot a The jaws a? and e are mounted, traversed and supported similarly to the jaws c. The jaw d swings or pivots upon a stem or projecting portion h of a traversable nut h which is moved by the screw '5 and supported and guided at k in the slot 00*, while the jaw e swings or pivots upon the stem or portion j of a traversable nut j which is moved by the screw Z and supported and guided at 7' in the slot a Each jaw is therefore independently adjustable as to the angle of its gripping face, is independently traversable, and is capable of being swung clear around upon its carrying stem or projecting portion so that the gripping face of the jaws may operate for internal grip or in such positions that the backs of the jaws are toward each other. 7
The jaws are secured to their stems or projecting portions by clampin bolts 'm which serve to lock the jaws in a justed pou sition as to angle of the jaw face but permit said jaw to be afterward traversed by its screw to operate on the work. washer m is applied between the top of the stem and the adjacent shoulder -of recess in the jaw-into which the stem projects-to hold the jaw clear of the bed surface a but this washer may be removed to permit the jaw to be firmly clamped to the bed surface a The traversing screws are journaled in the bed in a manner well understood in machine shop practice.
aving now described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is I 1. In a vise; a bed having a'plurality of slots, one of which is arranged at an angle to theothers, a member slidably mounted in each of said slots, a aw member mounted to swing on each of said slidable members for adjustment of angle of gripping face, means for securing said jaw members to said A loose slidable members after adjustment, and
means for moving said-slidable members in said slots.
2. In a Vise, a bed, a plurality of jaw-carrying members mounted to slide upon said bed, a jaw mounted for swinging movement on each of said jaw-carrying members, and
means for imparting sliding movement to each of said jaw-carrying members,
3. In a Vise, a bed having a plurality "of slots arranged substantially in the form of the letter T, a nut mounted to slide in each of said slots, each of ,said nuts having a stem, a rigidly built jaw member mounted on each of said stems for adjustment of angle of gripping face, separate meansv for fixlng each jaw member to its respective nut after adjustment, and a screw engaging each nut to impart sliding movement to said nut. I i i I In testimony whereof I have hereunto set myhand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
