Vices.-The fixed jaw 2 of an instantaneous-grip vice forms part of a sleeve 1 which may be bolted to a bench or table or may be fixed to the longitudinal or transverse edge of a school desk, table, or the like by means of an eccentric hook 17, which is pivoted at 16 and the front end of which engages an annular groove in the pin 18 fixed to the sleeve ; the jaw 2 is also provided with a flange 19 engaging over the edge of the table. The latter method of attachment is used also for fixing wide work between the hench-iron and the vice-jaw 4 which acts as the back-stop of the bench. In the bearing-blocks 6 of the sleeve is mounted a worm 5, consisting of a single coarse thread, rotated by means of a lever 7. The thread of the worm is interrupted and is formed at a with a sharp edge to facilitate the engagement with the nut 8 on the movable jaw 4, which also has similar edges b. Further to facilitate the engagement, the top of the movable jaw has a series of ribs 10, which contact with a leaf spring 11 fixed to and passing through a recess 12 in the sleeve so as automatically to displace the jaw, the head of the spring assuming its deepest position in one of the notches 13. The movable jaw is kept parallel by guide-lugs 14 on the sleeve and projects above the surface of the fixed jaw.
