Abstract
838,619. Vices. ZALEWSKI, W. Sept. 12, 1958 [Sept. 13, 1957], No. 28916/57. Class 61. A quick action vice comprises a fixed jaw 15 attached to a base 11 and a movable jaw 29 slidable on the upper surface of the base. A hollow tubular barrel 18 is adapted to slide but not to rotate in a bore provided in a bearing 13 attached to the base 11. The means by which the barrel can be adjusted in the bearing 13 and which constitute the coarse adjustment ofthe jaw 29 consist in providing screw threads 18 on the barrel and a nut 42 screwing thereon, the nut being held in adjusted position against the bearing 11 by a retaining plate 43, screw 48 and clamping nut 50. A thrust rod 25 is slidably mounted within the barrel 18, the ball-like forward end 28 of the rod being held in a seating in the rear face of the jaw 29 by the portions 32 of a divided plate or otherwise. Clamping pressure is applied to the jaw 29 by cam and follower means. The cam 23 turns on a spindle 22 mounted on the end of the barrel 18 in which a spring 27 is mounted to keep the end of the thrust rod in engagement with the cam. A device 57, 58 for setting the lateral position of the work is provided. In a modification a positive action for clamping and a spring return for unclamping is provided. In a modified cam arrangement, Fig. 3 (not shown), the cam is formed by a slot in a cup member at the end of the barrel, the cam follower comprising a radial pin extending from the thrust rod. The movable jaw has sliding rods 51 attached thereto by joints 52, 53 permitting angular movements, the rods working in guideways in the bearing 13. The lower surface of the movable jaw has a curved formation 30 at one edge merging into an incline 31 to allow a slight rock. In a modification, Fig. 4, the underside of the movable jaw 29 has a downwardly projecting abutment 59 for cooperation with the adjustably positioned end 62 of a screwed rod whereby the jaw is maintained in vertical or tilted position.
