Vices in which a rough and fine adjustment are controlled by one handle have an adjusting spindle, screwthreaded for a portion of its length at m, engaging a nut p on which is pivotally mounted a lever s carrying at its lower end a pawl member engaging a longitudinal rack bar g. The movable jaw may always be freely adjusted up to the work, rotation of the screw effecting the final adjustment. In opening the jaws the spindle is first unscrewed to bring a frusto-conical member n into contact with the lever s and liberate the engagement of the pawl and rack bar against the action of springs v, w, when the jaw can be freely moved in either direction.
