Abstract

733,368. Vices. STAPLES, G. F., and MITCHELL, R. Nov. 9, 1953 [Nov. 12, 1952], No. 28471/52. Class 61. In a vice one or both jaws have a vertically serrated face to which is adjustably attached a pair of holders 17 which are correspondingly serrated on their rear faces and which stand above the top of the vice jaw. The holders are each held in adjusted position on the jaw by a bolt 18 passing therethrough to engage with a nut 19 located in a T-slot 20 disposed transversely of the jaw. Each holder 17 has a square hole in which a locator 21 is a close sliding fit, the projecting front end of each locator being machined to grip a work component 25, the projecting rear end of the locator being spherical to engage in a radiused groove 24 in a rocker 23 rotatably mounted on the jaw. The rocker is locked in position with its central line square to the axis of the vice screw by inserting a pin through bushed holes 26, 27 in the rocker and vice jaw, respectively. Each locator is slid rearwardly until its spherical end seats in the groove 24 and is locked in position by a grub-screw 21a. The front ends of the locators are then machined to the correct angle for gripping the component. Transverse slots to receive the sides of a turbine blade may be provided in the locators. Plain plates having serrations to fit the serrations on the vice jaws are provided. The vice shown comprises a fixed jaw 13 and movable jaw 14 carrying a nut 15 engaging with the lead-screw 12 which may be turned by the handle 16. A supplementary handle 29 is carried by the upwardly-inclined end of the split shaft 30, 31 which has driving connection through bevel gears 34, 35 with the screw 12, a dog type clutch 36 being provided which slips when a predetermined load is exceeded. A vice having two movable jaws operated by a right and left hand thread is also described.
