Abstract
552,251. Vices. FLOWERS, P. E. May 12, 1941, No. 10855/42. Convention date, Feb. 20, 1941. Divided out of 552,221, [Group XXII]. [Class 61 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] A work-holding jaw, e.g. for use in a sheetmetal stretching and forming machine, as described in Specification 522,221, comprises a number of oppositely disposed clamping units each of which includes a pair of blocks 20, 21 one or both of the blocks 21 being moved to clamp the work between them or release it. Each block 21 is engaged by toggles 23, with cylindrical ends 25, the other ends engaging sockets in the blocks 20 which are fixed in the jaw frame 16. Each block 21 is pressed up by a spring pin 29, to grip the work, and may be moved down, to release the work, by a bolt 36, all the bolts being individually adjustable and locked in a member 42 which can be moved vertically by a number of cams 49 oscillated simultaneously by a handle 57, Fig. 1, levers 54 and a link 55. The separate bolts 36 may be adjusted differently so that some of the blocks 21, though closed, permit desired amounts of slip while others clamp firmly, the gripping faces being smooth to prevent damage to the work. The blocks are made of tough metal, e.g. nickel steel.
