627,537. Spanners; clamps. HAMILTON, R. H. Feb. 14, 1947, No. 4296. Convention date, Feb. 21, 1946. [Classes 61(ii) and 61(iii)] [Also in Group XXIV] A spanner, clamp, &c. comprises a shank or guide 10 and a sliding jaw 13 with two pairs of spaced bearing surfaces adapted to engage the shank, one pair 14, 17 being so disposed obliquely as to bind on the shank in the normal reaction of gripping the nut and the other pair 15, 16 being disposed farther apart so as not to bind on the shank when the jaw is pressed in the opposite direction, thus permitting free sliding adjustment. The clearance between the shank and the bearing surfaces is so small that all of the latter may simultaneously be disposed substantially in contact with the shank. The bearing surfaces may be constituted by the ends of relatively offset elongated projections in the jaw, and may be formed on a slide movable along a channel-like guideway in the shank.
