Abstract

274,402. Hay, W. G. May 7, 1926. Movable-abutment type; discharge and suction pipes and passages for pumps; packing drums and abutments.-A rotary pump of the type comprising an elliptic piston 23 mounted on a, central shaft in a cylindrical pump chamber 54 with a rocking abutment controlled by means external to the casing is provided with two diametrically opposite abutments 55 actuated by arms 33 with rollers 34 running on an external elliptical cam 24 or cam slot, so as to prevent undue pressure of the abutments on the piston. Springs 35 maintain the rollers 34 in contact with the cam 24 at starting. The driving pulley is secured to the elliptical cam 24 by bolts 26. The two inlet ports 28 are connected to a common inlet pipe and the two delivery ports 30 to a common delivery pipe 38 by passages 39 in the pump casing. Non-return valves 31 may be fitted in both sets of ports. Asbestos, plumbago, or reinforced rubber packings are provided in the abutments. Elliptic packing rings may be fitted to the piston sides. The abutments may work in sealed recesses to give an air cushioning effect.
