Abstract

Actuating by gas and steam pressure; actuating by weights; pumps in -series; oscillating-cylinder pumps; revolving-cylinder pumps; pumps in series.-A pump for liquids comprises a rotary or oscillating body d arranged in a stationary casing a and having a transverse passage f fitted with a sliding plunger e. The casing has an inlet c and outlet b for the liquid. The piston may be reciprocated independently of the rotation of the body d by means of pressure fluid admitted to the piston by a port k. The pressure fluid may exhaust through the inlet pipe, which is preferably inclined upwards, or through an exhaust port a<1>. The size of the port k may be varied by a valve, or by longitudinal adjustment of the body d. A port a<2> may be provided for the escape of the pressure fluid displaced by. the incoming liquid. Several passages and pistons may be arranged in staggered relation in different planes on the body d. The piston may be differential in form, one end being actuated by the pressure fluid, the other forcing the liquid. The weight of the piston may assist the rotation of the body d. Several passages f may be arranged radially in the same plane, and be connected by a fixed central passage f<2>, Fig. 14, when in alinement with ports c, k. In another form, the piston has an adjustable relief-valve and a spring packing-ring. In another form, the passage f is open to an exhaust steamchest at one point in its revolution, and the steam which raises the piston is afterwards condensed by a jet of water injected into the passage f. Two pumps may be arranged in series.
