Abstract

Fixed-abutment type; movable-abutment type, plant; driving pumps; packing drums, vanes, abutments, and the like; back-pressure, reducing. -A rotary engine or pump with blades mounted on a shaft 6 to sweep the wall of a cylinder concentric therewith and projecting through a double walled eccentric drum which touches the cylinder utilizes the space within the drum, the space between the walls of the drum, and the space outside the drum as working spaces. In the forms shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the double walled drum 23 is provided with inclined webs 24 so that this section may act as a turbine or a turbine pump; two vanes 20, 21 are independently mounted on the central shaft and provided with end and side packing pieces 33, 34, the latter being pressed out by the centrifugal action on rollers 35 housed in inclined grooves in the vanes. Packing grooves 31 are formed on the bearing surfaces of the drum. The drum contacts with a recessed portion of the casing and to prevent back pressure arising from fluid drawn into the vane slots due to the withdrawal of the vanes thereinto during the passage over this recessed portion of the casing a groove 56 is cut in the casing. The modification shown in Fig. 3 comprises a diametral blade 37 which projects through slotted bearings 38 carried by segmental members 39 sliding in the double walled drum; the alternate approaching and receding movement of the segmental members is used to effect a working operation, the fluid being admitted and discharged through ports 63 in the drum ends which periodically register with fixed ports 61 in the cylinder. The different working spaces may be used for different pumped fluids or one may serve as a motor unit for driving. The device may be used as a brake by connecting the inlet and outlet through a cock variably throttled; as a shock absorber by providing a spring-pressed one-way valve between the inlet and outlet and a small leak or oppositely working one way valve so that the device moves readily in one direction but slowly in the other.
