Abstract

Fixed-abutment type; packing drums, vanes, abutments, and the like; discharge and suction pipes and passages for pumps; compensating for irregularity of flow.-A rotary engine or pump of the type in which a diametral vane 2 is secured to a central shaft 1 in a cylindrical casing 3 and projects through an eccentric drum has the drum formed by two closely fitting cylinders 4, 5, the vane at each end engaging a narrow slot 6 or 7 in one cylinder and being capable of circumferential movement in an extended slot 8 or 9 of the other cylinder. To maintain a contact of the vane in the narrow slot during the angular tilting, spring blades 14 may be fitted to the vane, or the latter may be engaged by the flat faces of segmental pieces 15 rocking in recesses 16 in the cylinder slot, Fig. 6. The drum has surface contact with the casing over an arc 10 of greater extent than the slot 8. Ports 17, 18 are arranged in the casing end walls so that the interior of the drum may be utilized. An arrangement of non-return valves 36 - - 39 is shown in Fig. 9 by which the external flow. is unaltered on reversal. A plurality of pump units may be connected through detachable couplings such as an Oldham coupling; the vanes may be arranged at an angle to prevent fluctuations in the flow. The drive may be effected through either of the drum cylinders 4, 5 or through the shaft 1.
