Abstract

164,180. Ricardo, H. R. March 24, 1920. Revolving-cylinder pumps; heat of compression, absorbing.-In a pump or compressor comprising a series of radial cylinders rotatable about a fixed spindle or trunnion, the cylinder inlet and outlet ports being controlled by ports in the trunnion, and the pistons having rollers at their outer ends running on an eccentric floating circular track, a valved delivery passage is formed in the trunnion serving all the cylinders, cooling water is circulated in the trunnion, and a rotary sleeve formed in one with the cylinders is supported on ball bearings from the trunnion and separated from the trunnion by a liquid film or labyrinth packing, the sleeve constituting the ends of the cylinders and being formed with ports corresponding with an inlet and an outlet port in the trunnion. As shown, the trunnion A is formed with an inlet port H connected by a passage with the ball bearings J on which the sleeve K is supported, and with an outlet port C<2> connected with an outlet passage C controlled by a ball valve D<1> held by an adjustable spring and leading to a valved discharge passage F. Cooling water is circulated in the trunnion by a passage G containing an open-ended tube G<1>. Ports K<3>, L' in the sleeve coact with the ports C<2>, H, controlling the passage of air to and from the cylinders. The pistons carry rollers M<1> running on a track N carried by a two-port casing N', N<2> mounted eccentrically on ball bearings. The inner end of the sleeve is castellated to engage a toothed disc P on the driving shaft P<1>.
