Abstract
261,872. Dawson, Sir A. T., and Buckham, Sir G. T. Sept. 16, 1925. Ordnance breech mechanism.-Semi-automatic guns of the vertically sliding breech-block type, adapted also to be operated by hand, are provided with two breech-closing springs one of which is always in action while the other is inoperative when the mechanism is operated by hand. The first spring approximately balances the weight of the breech-block. The breech mechanism shown comprises a breech-ring A, vertically-sliding block B, breech-actuating crank-shaft D and hand-lever C. The balancing spring E, Fig. 3, is mounted in a recess at the left side of the breech-ring A and is acted upon by a rack member E<2> engaging a part pinion D' on the crank shaft so that this spring E is compressed whenever the breech is opened, whether automatically or by hand. The main closing spring F is mounted in the hand-lever C and acts upon a rack F<2> engaging a part pinion D<5> on the crank shaft. During semi-automatic actuation, the hand-lever C is locked to the breech-ring by a plunger C', Fig. 5, and the spring F is compressed when the breech is opened. During hand actuation, the handlever C is locked to the crank shaft D by a catch C<4>, Fig. 5, which is turned by a hand grip C<5> to engage a notch D<6> in the part pinion D<5>. The spring then merely moves with the hand-lever without being compressed. The semi-automatic mechanism comprises a crank D<2> having a lateral projection D<3> co-operating with a cam D<4>, Fig. 3, as described in Specification 261,500.
