Breech actions, sliding breechblock; protecting from dust and rain. - A cover for the ejection opening of an automatic firearm is carried by a lever having means thereon co-operating with a reciprocating firing member. The invention is shown applied to a rifle of the kind described in Specification 133,379, in which the action-slide 8 constitutes the firing member adapted to be held cocked by the sear. The cover 12 is pivoted at the front of a lever 10 which is pivoted at the side of the breech-body. A stud 11 on the lever projects through a slot 11<a> in the breech-body and is adapted, when the action-slide is in the cocked position and the rear end of the lever 10 is depressed, to engage a slot 9 in the action-slide. If the cover is in the closed position when the slide is forward, it is opened during the backward stroke of the slide by a cam surface 9<a>, Fig. 9, at the rear of the slide engaging the stud. The device is especially intended to be applied to existing rifles. The lever is secured to the body by a removable fastening comprising a pivot 13<a>, Fig. 6, carried by a spring plate 13. The pivot is formed with lateral projections adapted to pass through corresponding registering slots formed at the sides of the pivot holes in both the lever and breech-body and then to engage the inner surface of the breech-body when the plate 13 is turned through a right-angle. A projection on the plate springs into a small recess in the lever 10 to prevent relative displacement.
