376,294. Automatic firearms. WHITE AUTOMATIC GUN CORPORATION, Portland, Maine, U.S.A.-(Assignees of White, J. C. ; 28, Westland Avenue, Boston, U.S.A.) Jan. 2, 1931, No. 3509/32. Convention date, Jan. 8, 1930. Divided on 376,316. [Classes 9 (i) and 119.] An automatic gun or rifle of the shoulder type either gas or recoil-operated comprises in combination a breech-block, a magazine below the path of the breech-block, a cartridge loader or packet receivable in the magazine, cartridge-lifting means, means to permit the emptied packet to be ejected under manual control, and a catch having no connection with the trigger mechanism adapted to hold the breech open when the last cartridge has been fired. The cartridge loader, Figs. 6 and 7, is made of sheet metal with a back 115 and sides 114 adapted to hold ten cartridges in staggered formation between end lips. This loader can be inserted in the magazine 110, Fig. 1, either end up, and the back of the loader is provided with two nibs 117 one or the other of which is engaged by a retaining catch 119 behind the magazine. The sheet-metal loader bears on a leaf 122 of a spring 120 in the bottom of the magazine, and another leaf 121 of the same spring bears against a lever 123 hinged at 124 and connected by a pivot 127 to a follower 126 held up by a spring 127a. The upward swing of the lever 123 is limited by a stop 125. The magazine extends below the guard-plate 70 and is secured by the master screw 11 ; and this screw also secures to a lug 10 on the receiver the flange 128a of a yoke 128, to which is pivoted at 129 a two-armed member 130 with internal lips 131 for guiding and retaining the cartridges at the mouth of the magazine. This guide member is held up by the rear end of the action-slide guide-rod 32, and its upward movement is limited by stops projecting from the yoke 128. If it is desired to remove a loader while cartridges still remain in it, the guide member 130 is depressed by a plunger device, whereupon the lips of the guide member spread apart and down over the uppermost cartridges. When the last cartridge has been fired, a lateral pin 142 on the lever 123 comes against a projection 143 on a breech catch 135 pivoted at 139 and lifts that catch into a notch in the action-slide 28, thereby holding the breech open. The catch 119 may then be deflected by hand to allow the spring leaf 112 to eject the empty loader. The catch 119 is fulcrumed in a slot in the guard-plate 70 and is held in place by a lateral projection 148 on the base of the ejector 68. The breech may be allowed to close at any time by a deflection of the breech catch 135 by manual operation of a handle thereon. Specification 5099/00, [Class 9, Ammunition &c.], is referred to.
