Abstract

225,577. Browning, J. M. July 31, 1923, [Convention date]. Machine guns.-Relates to firing-mechanism for automatic machine guns of the kind described in Specification 133,351 in which the firing pin has means for taking the thrust of one end of the firing spring, a removable abutment on the breech-block taking the thrust at the other end. According to the present invention, the removable abutment is locked in its operative position by a cocking lever. The invention is shown in Fig. 6 applied to the machine gun described in Specificaton 219,932. The firing pin, see plan Fig. 7 and elevation Fig. 13, comprises a forward part 17 detachable from a rear tubular part 18 containing the firing spring 20 which abuts at its forward end against a pin 27 and at its rear end against a pin 29 carried by a member 30 insertable in a vertical slot in the breech-block 13. The cocking lever 25 is pivoted in this slot and retains the member 30. The lower arm of the cocking lever engages a slot 19 in the firing pin, and its upper arm during recoil engages a fixed member 35 to cock the firing pin into engagement with a vertically sliding sear 23 on the rear of the breech-block. The trigger 9 on the rear plate operates a rocking trigger lever 33 to depress the sear when the breech-block is in the forward firing position.
